Events:

A summer “Little School” was organized as a pre-school experience for 46 4-6-year-olds. Four PMSS teachers and 62 volunteer aides from Grades 7-10 provided an exciting school readiness experience for these youngsters.

An Ohio church youth camp was at PMSS for its sixth summer.

A youth employment opportunity on a special grounds crew was enthusiastically received.

Permanent lighting in the Laurel House living room was provided through the generosity of former student and staff member Bill Hayes, who solicited the funds from friends and installed the lights.

The faculty of University of Kentucky Southeast Center had an orientation retreat at PMSS during Labor Day week-end.

Saturday, October 5, a combined Trustees’ Meeting, Pine Mountain Fair, Homecoming and 50th anniversary celebration featured Fair Day exhibits, school exhibits, the opening of the Pine Mountain Room (archives), folk-singer Edna Ritchie, Berea College President Francis Hutchins, and a PMSS history tableaux presented by Pine Mountain students.

Community involvements of Pine Mountain staff members included:

Alvin Boggs – Boy Scout Council, Urban Workshop, Harlan County Ministerial Association Brit Wilder – Soil Conservation Council
Mildred Mahoney – Teaching evening class at U.K.S.E. Center at Cumberland

Gerna Campbell – Harlan County Teachers Association
Mary Rogers – Speaking, Reviewing books for Courier-Journal
Charlie & Joyce Whitaker – Teaching folk dancing

Burton Rogers – Speaking engagements, County Extension Service Board, support to Appalachian Hospitals, Honorary member, Harlan Kiwanis Club.
