ARTS AND CRAFTS CERAMICS Guide

The following ARTS AND CRAFTS CERAMICS GUIDE is a fluid document. As more documents are discovered in the archives they will be entered as part of this GUIDE.

The organization of the GUIDE is based in large part on three folders of 1965-1970 material gathered to document the early attempt to create a pottery program at the School. The archival materials detail the establishment of a pottery program that focused on salt-glazed pottery that was researched and outfitted by Paul Lynn, a staff member at Pine Mountain in the late 1960s through 1970. Lynn had an interest in the craft and he sought to inform himself and those around him about salt-glazed pottery. He sought to establish a pottery studio at the School. The studio he created was housed in the old Electrical Power House, near the Chapel on the campus. The building was restructured to include a wood-fired kiln to be used with the salt-glazed pottery initiative.

His papers and notes follow. While the material was archivally ordered in the late 1990s, this digital re-ordering is made to accommodate additional material and is based on the demands associated with re-vitalizing the pottery program at the School as new equipment comes to the School and as community interest in pottery grows. The following pages attempt to establish an archival framework of pottery activity at Pine Mountain Settlement School. The following material from the files left by Paul Lynn at the School form the core of pottery exploration at the School to date.
