The Rural Youth Guidance Institutes Guide by Year provides links to material published as part of the Guidance Institute at Pine Mountain Settlement School. The educational guidance Institute was started by Glyn Morris, PMSS Director, and co-directed with James A. Cawood, Superintendent of Harlan County Public Schools. The Guidance Institute operated during a time of extended educational programs at Pine Mountain Settlement School during the 1930s and early 1940s. According to James Greene, PMSS Trustee,
After the war, the guidance institute was reconstituted as the Harlan County Guidance Institute. The first one held was in 1947 in Harlan with Glyn Morris, then principal of Evarts High School. as technical director. While Mr. [H.R.S.] Benjamin [participated] in this institute, he was apparently not actively involved in the planning….All the information I have about the Harlan County Guidance Institute which continued until the early 1960s was that it was held on the south side of the mountain, usually but not always in Harlan, and under the direction of Cawood into the 1960s. The Pine Mountain Settlement School Collections holds the summaries for the joint Institutes and particularly extensive material for the 22nd Annual Guidance Institute that took place in Harlan, Kentucky, in 1963 under the direction of James A. Cawood.
