The educational guidance Institute was started by Glyn Morris, PMSS Director, and co-directed with James A. Cawood, Superintendent of Harlan County Public Schools. The Guidance Institute operated during a time of extended educational programs at Pine Mountain Settlement School during the 1930s and early 1940s and, under the direction of Cawood, into the 1960s.
The Pine Mountain Settlement School Collections hold the summaries for the joint Institutes and particularly the extensive material for the 22nd Annual Guidance Institute that took place in Harlan, Kentucky, in 1963 under the direction of Harlan County Superintendent of Schools, James A. Cawood.
