PMSS Connections

My interest in Pine Mountain Settlement School (PMSS) grew out of early childhood and familial associations with the School. In various ways, members of my immediate family and many from the Hall family on my mother’s side have been involved with the School.

My mother, Susie Hall, and most of her eight siblings from Viper, Kentucky, were PMSS boarding students in the 1930s. While my mother was a student, my father, August Angel, freshly graduated from Miami (Ohio) University in 1933, was hired by Director Glyn Morris to teach science and printing and help establish the School’s print shop.

As time went on, my mother became the apple of my father’s eye, and two years after she graduated in 1934, they were married by Rev. Glyn Morris in the Chapel. When my father was offered a teaching position in an Ohio high school in 1937, my parents left the School and I was born in Ohio three years later. By that time my father had become dissatisfied with urban life and, longing for Pine Mountain’s peaceful and verdant campus, returned with his wife and daughter to continue teaching at the School. In the meantime, my mother worked as a housemother and tended to her new baby.

I was often told stories about my being one of the few little ones living on campus at the time and consequently often surrounded by adoring students. So much so, that she had to attach a “do not disturb” sign to my baby carriage. In 1942, my brother, Michael Angel, was born in the Infirmary (with Grace Rood as his nurse) and became the newest faculty baby on campus.

After leaving Pine Mountain and throughout the following years, my family lived in various locations about the country. But Pine Mountain was never forgotten. We children (which increased in number to three when my brother Patrick was born in Pennsylvania) grew up hearing stories my parents affectionately told of their Pine Mountain experiences. They always missed Kentucky and in later years returned to my mother’s birthplace, Viper, where my father set up a print shop, Graphic Arts Press. He also reconnected with the School, serving as treasurer of the Pine Mountain Alumni and Friends Association and providing printing services for the School. In recent times, my brother, Michael, contributed his knowledge as a consultant when Far House II was under construction and he has also given the School several pieces of his handcrafted furniture. Patrick and I have been members of the PMSS Board of Trustees and my father became a trustee just before he died in 1996.

Since 2000, I have worked with Helen Hayes Wykle, my second cousin, in organizing, cataloging and preserving Pine Mountain’s valuable collection of historical material, as well as adding a great deal of that material to the Pine Mountain Settlement School Collections website (details below).

1984-2002 Database coordinator in the central Development Office of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Retired in 2002.

1975-1985 Professional artist, specializing in oil painting; employed in various positions such as college instructor, artist-in-residence and art workshop teacher.

1972-present Worked or volunteered in various library positions, particularly seven years as supervisor of student assistants in the Pattee Library, The Pennsylvania State University, from 1972 until 1979.

Special Interest

Currently, I volunteer as co-archivist for an expansive collection of PMSS materials and co-editor of the PMSS Collections website and have done so, along with Helen Hayes Wykle, for approximately 19 years. Helen and I are second cousins, descendants of the same great-grandfather, Eli Hall of Viper, Kentucky, and related to a number of the families we have covered on the PMSS Collections website.

Throughout that time we have published narratives and biographies and digitized correspondence, documents, histories, photographs and memorabilia covering over 100 years of the School’s history. To date, the site consists of over 1700 pages and 26,000 photographs. Additionally, we have visited the School many times to organize, inventory and archive this material.

My particular focus has been writing the biographies of the many figures in Pine Mountain’s history, including directors, trustees, workers, students, visitors and families in the surrounding communities. While researching and writing their stories, I feel as if I have been transported into Pine Mountain’s past and I relish the opportunity to spend time in their shoes.

Helen and I shared many and varied experiences during this project, from working at first in a crowded, cobwebby, wasp- and ladybug-infested room in the PMSS Office to enjoying a bright, new and spacious Archive Room in Boys’ House which has greatly improved the accessibility of the materials for visitors. We have always felt that the project was well worth all our struggles and successes because we are engaged in a labor of love — continuing the preservation of Pine Mountain Settlement School’s rich historical collection begun by the founders and workers over a century ago.
