ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION Guide
1972 to present

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (EE) GUIDE 1972 TO PRESENT provides a map to the diverse programs taught over the years at Pine Mountain Settlement School and the current programs that continue to be available at the School in Harlan County, Kentucky.

In 2011 James Gleick wrote a book entitled Chaos: Making a New Science. It was an alternate window into the future of the planet that brought some to pull the curtains shut and others to charge out the doors to see for themselves a world changing around them.

Publisher’s Weekly said of Gleick’s book:

For centuries, scientific thought was focused on bringing order to the natural world. But even as relativity and quantum mechanics undermined that rigid certainty in the first half of the twentieth century, the scientific community clung to the idea that any system, no matter how complex, could be reduced to a simple pattern. In the 1960s, a small group of radical thinkers began to take that notion apart, placing new importance on the tiny experimental irregularities that scientists had long learned to ignore. Minuscule differences in data, they said, would eventually produce massive ones—and complex systems like the weather, economics, and human behavior suddenly became clearer and more beautiful than they had ever been before.

The natural world can be beautiful, but it can also be tragic. We are all joined in the journey to adore the beauty, discover the irregularities, and to mitigate if possible weather, economics, and human behavior that threaten the way to a “beautiful’ world.
