E. J. CARR PLANT CENTER Guide to Medicinal Plants

Ellwood Jerome Carr (1909-2005), Naturalist and Donor of the “E. J. Plant Center”
Located in the former Girls Industrial Building

Ellwood Jerome Carr, who preferred to be called “Bud” throughout his life, was 95 years old when he died on March 26, 2005, in Brodhead, Kentucky. His long life as a naturalist was regularly punctuated with accomplishment and his contribution to the botanical knowledge of southeastern Kentucky is well-known to those interested in the flora of this region.

The collection represented in these 16 photographs is held today in the former Girls Industrial Building which now houses the School’s Industrial Kitchen. The Kitchen, which trains the local community in food preservation, baking, nutrition, and other food-related skills, delights in the opportunity to showcase regional plants and seeds that were once used to both feed and heal early settlers in the Appalachians and other regions. While not currently an integral part of the training in the kitchen, the collection provides familiarity with the regional history of botanical specimens for both medicinal and nutritional use.
