DOROTHY NACE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM I part I
1940s
The DOROTHY NACE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM I PART I displays images of 94 photos by various Pine MOuntain photographers, particularly Arthur Dodd. The albums assembled by Dorothy Nace, a PMSS Office worker in the 1940s, contain selective images often used in promotional tours, brochures, and fund-raising activity. Her completed albums (Part I and Part II) contains approximately 204 photographs.
The photographs in the albums are largely the work of Arthur Dodd, who served as the 1940s PMSS principal and teacher and who was also a professional photographer. During the 1940s, he supplemented his income through many photographic and motion picture projects and by providing the School with films and images that capture the cultural life of the School and the surrounding community.
The Albums also contain photographs by Sarah [“Sally”] Marcia Loomis, a former worker at the School. The Loomis negatives for many of those photographs were later sent to the School by Loomis in 1947 to be added to the School’s photographic collection. Many of the prints from those negatives were added to the Nace photo-scrapbooks. See Sarah Marcia Loomis Photographs.
In addition to the photographic work of Arthur Dodd and Sarah Marcia Loomis, other photographer’s work is mixed into the images in the scrapbooks and is often not identified by the photographer’s name.
Nace and others used the images to promote the institution and to provide material for fundraising, publications, and speaking tours of the staff. Dorothy Nace was often charged with assembling materials for promotional tours, campaigns, and publications.
