DOROTHY NACE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM II
1913 – 1949 (107 Photographs)

The approximately 107 photographs contained in the DOROTHY NACE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM II, collected by Dorothy Nace (Tharpe), are largely the work of Arthur Dodd, principal and teacher at Pine Mountain Settlement School during the 1940s. DOROTHY NACE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM I contains 204 photographs. Collectively the two albums contain approximately 311 images.

The photographs in album II served the same purposes as those in DOROTHY NACE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM I, part I and part II. They were used by Nace and others to promote the institution and provide material for fund-raising, publications and speaking tours of the staff. Dorothy Nace, Secretary to the Director of Pine Mountain Settlement School, was often charged with assembling materials for promotional campaigns and for publications.

The photographs capture the School’s built environment, its daily life during the 1940s and the life of the surrounding community during the same period. There are also photographs pulled from earlier time periods and albums. These have been integrated with the later images and create some disparity in maintaining a chronological order. Many of the photographs are annotated which assists in identifying the time frame as well as the individuals.

The photographs in Album II are provided here with annotations and no modification of the original scan. In subsequent GALLERIES (Album I) the images are also provided as modified individual images and have been adjusted for value, sharpness, and other photographic quality.

All images are the property of Pine Mountain Settlement School and may not be reproduced, or altered for any commercial use. Your cooperation in honoring this request is greatly appreciated. See guidelines for USE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIAL.
