The Ruth Shuler Dieter Photograph Album is a small album with a collection of photographs of the Pine Mountain Settlement School boarding school days. It was donated to Pine Mountain by Ruth Shuler Dieter, who was a student at Pine Mountain from 1937-1940 during the Boarding School days. She later served as a bookkeeper and instructor in the Cooperative Education Program for two additional years.

Comprised of twenty images, the album captures many activities of the School while under the direction of Glyn Morris, the administrative head of the institution. The photographs are not the work of Ruth Shuler, but a collection of photographs she gathered during her years at the School. Many of the images are from the Harmon Foundation collection of stills that were part of a documentary film made by Virginia and Ray Garner at Pine Mountain Settlement School during the school year of 1941-1942. The film highlighted the Cooperative Education program at the institution and also provided images and narrative that documented the activities of the School.

Pine Mountain Settlement School’s boarding school years were formative ones for Ruth who maintained a life-long involvement in the School and returned late in her life to help steer the institution as a member of the School’s Board of Trustees. There are ample accounts in the archive of the valuable work she accomplished as a member of the Board and as a friend of the School.

A full biography of Ruth Shuler Dieter may be found here. It describes her early work as a “pack horse librarian,” a student health worker, a star in the School’s production of H.M.S. Pinafore, and many other activities while enrolled at the School and later as a member of the School’s staff.
