PMSS Student Counselor 1937-1940

From 1928 to 1930, Glenn Argetsinger served as one of the Antioch College Cooperative Education Program fellows at Pine Mountain. Seven years later, Glenn Argetsinger was one of several Cooperative students who was hired by Pine Mountain Settlement. He worked as a counselor to students from 1937 until 1940. During most of his time at the School, he worked under the guidance of Glyn Morris, Director.

The Antioch Co-op student teacher program ran from 1920 until 1930 and included other names familiar to the counseling program at Pine Mountain Settlement School, including Esther Weller, John Howard Young, and Harold Gough.

GLENN ARGETSINGER: At Pine Mountain

Argetsinger came on board the School staff in 1936 as an eager and opinionated member of the teaching staff. It was not long before he bumped heads with Glyn Morris, who was nearly the same age as Argetsinger and equally vocal in his educational and counseling opinions.

Upon arrival Argetsinger recorded his observations in the following brief handwritten document.

Pine Mountain Settlement School

[Aug] 1936-1940

Train from Yellow Springs, Ohio, to Harlan, Harlan County, Kentucky. Mr Day met me. Drive to Putney at base of the mountain: up a winding logging road, and down a winding road to the Valley, then several miles to the entrance gate, past a log cabin, which was used by one or two members of the faculty.

Given a room at FAR HOUSE: a 2 story w/ big living room, w/ piano. House mother rooms (Mother Merrill) ; girls dormitory, big room for dressing and bathroom, big room for sleeping un-screened [?], My room, sitting, studying, alcove for dressing, a sleeping screened in porch for a bed, bathroom in the hall.

Later walked up the creek introducing myself to the Columbus Creech family and the Henry Creech family. Later went in the opposite direction down another creek. These houses showed that income from farming was $35 a year. From mining (I heard) $60 a year and from logging something in between. Some cooking was done in lard buckets, some had maybe one china plate, some used an apron for a dish towel. No electricity, no running water in the house.

SCHOOL HOUSE — two story white siding clapboard. Downstairs, restrooms, stage auditorium, 8th grade room, counselors’ office. Upstairs high school classrooms, library.

Playground behind used Sunday afternoon for games , a variety, also baseball or hikes were scheduled up the Pine Mountain.
