CONIFER, MAY 1945 SUPPLEMENT – Gallery

One of the most outstanding contributions in this 1945 issue of the Conifer is a collaborative offering called “Our Heritage.” Prepared as a graduation presentation from the graduating class, the narrative traces the many regional contributions that individual students identified as part of their heritage. The long poem is both revealing and predictable in its offerings of historical markers associated with Eastern Kentucky but it also captures the tensions of post war graduation.

Most of all the Conifer 1945 is a heartfelt narrative of what the students have learned in their time at the School and in their associations with their cohort.  This literary supplement captures the essence of the graduating body and the mood and the impact WWII had on the lives of individual students and on the settlement school experience they shared as students.

Description The literary publication of the school during the boarding school year of 1945.  Written by students and containing fiction, prose, and poetry. The first creative writing publication written and printed by the students at Pine Mountain Settlement School. First published in 1930 as the Pine Cone and later replaced by Conifer, the volumes in the early years duplicate one another in part and issue numbers can be confusing, but the run of the periodical is largely well documented by volume and issue.
