The twelfth annual conference of Southern Mountain Workers was attended by many staff and BOT members from Pine Mountain. This conference, more than any other, was of considerable significance to those institutions that were focused on uplift of the people of the Central and Southern Appalachians.

This particular conference was well represented by Pine Mountain staff and former staff. Marguerite Butler and Edith Canterbury are of particular notice, as both were formerly at Pine Mountain and both were also strong supporters of the Danish Folk School model that played prominently with many members of the Southern Mountain Workers.
