The Nativity Play of the Pine Mountain Settlement School, Pine Mountain, Kentucky, has been a tradition since the first performance in School’s earliest years, over 100 years ago. Ethel de Long Zande, the author of the original script, gave a simple telling of the events surrounding the birth of Christ The de Long script of eight pages is elegant in its simple language, ease of presentation, and powerful in its minimalism and inclusion of the audience in the telling of the birth of Christ. The fundamental script has not been changed throughout its many annual performances.
Casts for the annual play included students, staff, and members of the community. Mary Rogers, a PMSS worker, directed the play in the 1940s for 30 years.
