BURTON ROGERS FILES Guide, Boxes 1-17, 1920-2007

The Burton Rogers Files Guide lists materials directly related to his tenure at Pine Mountain Settlement School as counselor and teacher, Principal of the Community School, and finally as the Director of the School. The scope of his files covers the years from 1920 to 1973. Burton’s association and correspondence with the School continued until his death in 2007 in Lexington, Kentucky.

The files, gathered in some 17 cartons, were stored first in the residence of the Executive Director, Nancy Adams, and later in the West Wind building archival room on the ground floor. While in West Wind storage, the physical re-housing at the folder level too place. In 2016 the files were removed to the Library (Boy’s House). They follow to a large degree the original order Burton gave his files which is alphabetical with some subsections which were also ranged alphabetically and/or by date. The date order within the folders is from most recent to older date. The collection has been cleaned and re-foldered which required a re-numbering and re-labeling of the folders and the cartons holding the collection.

A database containing brief descriptions of folder content has just begun and is listed under this guide in TABLE format as well as in narrative format by box and folder. The initial work on this large project is indebted to the trips made to Pine Mountain by Dr. Robert Spenser Weise, a member of the History and Religion department at Eastern Kentucky University. Rob’s intense work on inventory and folder level analysis of the Burton Roger records was invaluable to moving that large un-cataloged body of material into the public sphere. Thanks!

Burton was a prolific correspondent and he carefully documented all his planning and consultation while at Pine Mountain. Further, he was a keen observer and a careful and thoughtful planner. Within his files many of the processes for management of the School may be found clearly detailed. His deep sense of justice, fairness, and empathy for the region always shines through his work. His network of friends and consultants was extensive. Many documents show the role Mary Rogers had in Burton’s work with the School. This is particularly true with regard to the establishment of the Environmental Education program at the School.

A separate box for Mary Rogers has been created from the Burton Rogers files. It contains documents specific to Mary’s work at the School, particularly her involvement in community outreach, the Nativity Play and the development of the curriculum for the Environmental Education program.
