Gary Thomas Cummisk grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, and earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk. From January 1982 through December 1984, he was a Fine Art Teacher at Hindman (KY) Settlement School. After several months as a naturalist intern at Sharon Audubon Center in Sharon, Connecticut, he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, graduating in August 1983.

By January 1984, he was working with the Environmental Education Program (EE) at Pine Mountain (KY) Settlement School as a naturalist.
After Pine Mountain
Gary left PMSS in May 1985 and, five months later, married Gia Baldi, who was also an EE staff member at PMSS. In 1987, Gary graduated from Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA, with an MS in Natural Resources Management. He then earned an MFA in creative writing and poetry in 1992 at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) and went on to earn a Ph.D in Geography from the University of Oregon. By 1995, he was an adjunct professor at Central Washington University, teaching geography, anthropology, and English.
Since then Gary has also been an instructor of geography and anthropology at the Tri-County Technical College (Pendleton, SC), professor at Dickinson (ND) State University, visiting professor at the University of the Virgin Islands (Saint Thomas), and, as of 2021, an adjunct instructor at Northeast Texas Community College, Mount Pleasant, TX. He is currently retired, living in Ellensburg, Washington.
