Pine Mountain Settlement School has always offered clubs and after-school activities to the surrounding community. Many of these extra-curricular activities conducted during evenings and weekends provided a broader engagement for many students in the area.

The Boy Scout Troop was a long-standing offering at the School. Begun by Leon Deschamps in the early years of the School it was carried forward by volunteers. Alvin Boggs, who led the Pine Mountain School as its Director in the 1960s, re-initiated a Boy Scout program and with the help of other staff, including Burton Rogers,  provided a rich after-school experience for young boys in the community. The young boys eagerly gathered Boy Scout medals of accomplishment and benefited from the close attention of Alvin who was a well-known educator.  The after-school program also strengthened the Harlan County School program located on the campus at Pine Mountain until the new County school at nearby Green Hill was completed.

The educational support of Pine Mountain could also be found in the Storytelling sessions in the library with Mary Rogers, wife of the Pine Mountain School Director, Burton Rogers. Further, evenings of Folk Dancing led by a staff member and teacher, Milly Mahoney, enhanced the after-school programs even more and were used to bring the children’s parents into the recreational activities

The following images, copied from the original negatives, document many of the after-school activities available to the community children and families on the north side of Pine Mountain.

There must be a story behind the many dents on the station wagon in the photographs, but the cause was not given, nor were the names of many of the students. However, many of the students seen here will be familiar to the older community in the Valley.
