BUILT ENVIRONMENT Hill House Restoration Photographs

The restoration of the Infirmary, renamed “Hill House” in later years did not aim to restore the building to its earlier configuration but was aimed at providing additional accommodation for guests visiting the campus. The two critical needs in guest housing is for kitchen facilities and for sleeping accommodation. The lower floor of the Infirmary (Hill House) was the focus of the restoration efforts completed under the watchful eye of David and crew.

Aided by the donation of kitchen cabinets from the cabin of William and Fern Hayes, a new kitchen was installed in the structure. When the William Hayes log cabin in nearby Viper, Kentucky, was taken down to accommodate the new HWY 7 road improvements in the area, the declared imminent domain required the destruction of many homes in its path. The cabin logs were also donated to Pine Mountain until they were deemed of “no use” to the School and removed from Barn storage to a private residence where a verbal agreement was made to use the logs for future construction projects related to Pine Mountain and possible log-cabin models at the School. This action was unfortunately not completed as agreed.

Later adjustments to the Infirmary patient space resulted in the accommodation of more individual sleeping rooms. The three new bedrooms on the lower floor added to the three upper bedrooms — many with 2-3 beds each, greatly increased the capacity of the building to accommodate guest groups. The older name of “Infirmary” gave way to the new name of “Hill House” as one of the newest remodeled residential building on the campus.
