 REBA BLEVINS: At Pine Mountain

Reba Blevins was a student at Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1945-1946 during the School’s boarding school era.

REBA BLEVINS CORNETT: After Pine Mountain

After her short time at Pine Mountain, Reba attended Kingdom Come High School in Linefork, Letcher County, Kentucky. Later she earned a bachelor’s degree from Berea (Kentucky) College and a master’s degree from Peabody College, a partner with Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

She began her teaching career in rural Kentucky teaching elementary school for several years, then was employed by the Port Angeles School System in Washington state until she retired. There, she taught reading to kindergarten through fifth grades and wrote the reading curriculum for the elementary schools in the district. She was active in the Retired Teachers’ Association for Clallam County in Washington and chaired several scholarship committees. Her obituary in the Peninsula Daily News described her as having enjoyed traveling and nature and “was a lifelong learner.”

Reba Blevins was born in Big Laurel, Kentucky, to Lawrence Blevins, a lumberman, and Mary Jane (Boggs) Blevins. Her siblings included three brothers, Rufus, Billy Ray, and Curtis and three sisters, Louellen, Mabel, and Betty. She married Estill (Estell?) Cornett on December 30, 1955, at Pine Mountain.

Reba Blevins Cornett died at age 91 on October 28, 2022, in Port Angeles, Washington. A burial ceremony was held at the Middle Tennessee Veteran’s Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.
