DATE | ITEM | PAGES |
April 27, 1942 | J. S. Crutchfield to Glyn Morris acknowledging receipt of his request for a leave of absence in connection with war duties. Suggested they leave the matter “as is” until the Board meeting in June. | 1 |
April 30, 1942 | Glyn Morris to J.S. Crutchfield informing him he had been advised by the Chief of Chaplains that his application for a chaplaincy in the Army had been forwarded and he should anticipate hearing about acceptance in two to three weeks. Had been working at the school for 11 years. | 2 |
May 4, 1942 | Evelyn Wells to J.S. Crutchfield concerning Morris’s request for a “leave of absence.” Would want Morris to return but that could be an extended time so she believed if the Board found someone to run the school that they liked, they should be free to employ them. While believing that soldiers should be able to return to their jobs she felt Morris’ war job is the school, and if he gives it up “he cannot expect us to hold things.” Believed there would be difficulties with the staff if Mrs. Dodd were the director’s wife. | 1 |
May 5, 1942 | Glyn Morris to J.S. Crutchfield stating his concern that no action had been taken by the board concerning his request for leave. He received notice from the War Department to report for Duty May 16. He believed there was a “gentlemen’s agreement” between him and the Board. Recommended that [Arthur] Dodd be given additional duties and authority during his absence. Mrs. Morris would remain at PMSS for an indefinite period. | 2 |
May 8, 1942 | J.S. Crutchfield to Glyn Morris indicating the majority of the Executive Committee believed the uncertainty of the length of his leave made it impractical to offer him a leave of absence. | 1 |
May 10, 1942 | Evelyn Wells to Glyn Morris concerning the difficulty of his two-week notice. Not for “gentlemen’s agreements.” | 1 |
May 12, 1942 | Evelyn Wells to J.S. Crutchfield concerning [Dorothy] Elsmith and Alice Cobb’s distress over Crutchfield’s May 8 letter to Morris. Note at bottom concerning Wells’ feelings in regard to Mrs. Dodd. | 2 |
May 12, 1942 | J.S. Crutchfield to Glyn Morris concerning a meeting in New York between Morris and Executive Committee as Morris departs for his chaplain assignment. | 1 |
May 18, 1942 | Memorandum to the Board of Trustees concerning the scheduling of meeting in New York. Addressing the serious problem of school management during Morris’s absence. Absence was not granted at the time of its request. Must be taken up now. Morris recommends management by committee – Mrs. Morris, Mr. Dodd and Miss [Alice] Cobb. Suggests the duties of each party. | 2 |
June 15, 1942 | Evelyn Wells to Glyn Morris informing him that the Board voted to give him a years leave of absence. Advertising for an interim director with a chance for permanent employment. A lot of candidates because of missionaries on forced furlough. Mentions Morris’s May 1942 study. | 2 |
June 16, 1942 | Evelyn Wells to Arthur Dodd concerning Morris’s leave and search for an acting director. Narrowed to two candidates both had foreign missionary work and have been “caught by the war in this country.” Jesse Cornett night watchman. [Mary Rockwell] Hook visits to work on repairs. | 2 |
June 18, 1942 | Arthur Dodd to Evelyn Wells concerning Boards actions that will affect the school’s operation. Infirmary helper and Office assistant positions open. The number of volunteer applicants has decreased. Purchase of equipment for Laurel House and West Wind and the transfer of funds. Dodd requests a salary raise for himself. Kiwanis camp. Expecting arrival of Burton Rogers and Mrs. Beals. Note from Wells at the bottom of the page indicating her support for Dodd’s raise. | 2 |
June 30, 19 | Evelyn Wells to Arthur Dodd concerning the hiring and pay of Miss Twichell as the nurses’ assistant. Rogers arriving to serve as the counselor. Connecting with Simmons College and Framingham Normal School about hiring a Home Economics teacher. Budget deficit. Ruth Shuler arrives to serve as book-keeper. Dodd’s salary increase. Cow infection. | 1 |

October 5, 1942 | J.S. Crutchfield to Evelyn Wells concerning Mr. Dodd and Miss Cobb’s payment. | 1 |
July 18, 1942 | Evelyn Wells to William Webb informing him of the Board’s decision to offer him a one-year contract to serve as interim director including details of his compensation. | 1 |
