WILLIAM HAYES 1938 Notebook of Biology Notes

This small collection of drawings and text was assembled by William Hayes for a class he had with science instructor, August Angel in 1938.  It is the work of a visual learner. William often carries that learning to the last detail.

The small notebook was completed in 1938, the same year that William Hayes graduated from Pine Mountain Settlement School. He attended Berea College for a brief time, specializing in training in agriculture, and then returned to the School where he continued his agricultural studies and was asked to head the School Farm and to become part of the School’s industrial training staff,  He served as farm manager at the School from approximately 1939 until 1950.

As farm manager, he worked closely with students and former students to keep the large farm operation running until the Boarding School closed in 1949. The assistance of other schoolmates such as Brit Wilder, was a critical function in the industrial training of the School. By providing training for students who wished to pursue careers associated with farming and dairy practice, many students were able to remain in the area after graduation. The large farm operation at the School was part of the educational program.  It provided industrial training as well as food for the institution. When the Boarding School closed and farming was no longer possible without the student support, Bill left to pursue a career in forestry and eventually in surface mining reclamation for the US Dept. of the Interior.
