February – March 1948
February 15. To Director H.R.S. Benjamin from Dr. Francis F. Tucker, Daytona Beach, FL, who regrets that Dr. and Mrs. Caldwell are probably not candidates for PMSS employment. He states that he and Dr. Emma will be available to work at PMSS in July.
March 2. To Benjamin from Dr. F.F. Tucker, suggesting Miss Annie E. Pinneo, a former missionary, as a candidate for teaching English at PMSS if needed. He provides her background information.
March 11. To Dr. F.F. Tucker from [unsigned, evidently Benjamin], thanking him for his suggestion, but the current English Department at PMSS is “well covered.” Instead, Benjamin asks for a suggestion for a secretary, as Dorothy Nace is resigning at the end of this year. Benjamin tells Tucker, “We look forward to your vital contribution and the youthful spirit you bring to the program.” He describes the “beautiful hoar frost” on the mountaintop and “a feel of snow in the air.”
March 26. To Dr. F.F. Tucker from [unsigned, evidently Benjamin], who has learned from Miss [Grace] Rood that the Tuckers’ visit will be in July.
March 30. To Benjamin from Dr. F.F. Tucker on a letterhead for Olds Hall Fellowship, Daytona Beach, FL. He is pleased to read Benjamin’s postscript in his March 26 letter, stating that Miss Nace will work at PMSS for another year. He and Dr. Emma will arrive July 1 to fill in during Dr. [Elizabeth] Henderson’s vacation. He recalls the suggestion that PMSS have an Easter sunrise service and describes attending one such service at Hindman [Settlement] School in the past.
April – May 1948
April 7. To Benjamin from Dr. F.F. Tucker on a letterhead for Olds Hall, suggesting that Miss Gertrude McCormick may be useful at PMSS as a worker or volunteer.
May 3. To Benjamin from Dr. F.F. Tucker, asking if his son, Dr. Francis C. Tucker, and family can vacation at PMSS for July. He assures that “We senior Tuckers [will] pay any amount called for…” The Tuckers will be visiting with their other son, Dr. Arthur, and his family. Then the family will then travel to Japan where Arthur will “serve as radiologist for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission there.”
May 6. To Benjamin from Dr. F.F. Tucker, with another hiring suggestion: Mrs. J. S. Greenway. Tells about his latest grandson.
May 7. To Dr. F.F. Tucker from [unsigned, evidently Benjamin]. After consulting “all who might be concerned,” he agrees to Tucker’s request for his son and family to stay at PMSS. He also accepts Dr. F.F. Tucker’s suggestion that his daughter-in-law (also named Emma) help with recreational work. Benjamin states the School will write off any costs, as “you and Dr. Emma are well worth all that to us with your wisdom, encouragement, and spirits. We do frankly appreciate your willingness to return and give us this lift each summer.”
May 14. To Benjamin from Dr. F.F. Tucker, asking the time and date of PMSS graduation, as the “Tucker Tribe” may be able to stop by and attend the event en route from Florida to Chicago by car.
-12 May 29. Handwritten two-page letter to Benjamin from Dr. F.F. Tucker in Lincoln, NE. He has learned that his son and daughter-in-law are medically advised to rest, avoiding any strain or responsibilities. The son has had no vacation for two or more years. The daughter-in-law is caring for their four small children and cannot help with recreation activities as suggested earlier. He tells of their stay in Chicago, his son’s departure for Japan, and his plans to attend upcoming events.
