Virginia and Ray Garner came to Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1941 under the auspices of the Harmon Foundation, a philanthropic organization that sponsored many film projects and artists between the years of 1922-1967.

Organized by William Harmon, the Foundation was charged to support artists who would use their talents to encourage the general public to explore other cultures through the arts. Beginning in 1922 the Harmon Foundation initiated the Division of Visual Experiment that was established to encourage creative individuals to “put vital experiences into visual form.” The Garners’ PMSS project fell under this division.

Storage at Appalshop

The following photographic collection located in the Pine Mountain Settlement School Archive is derived from the 16 mm silent EK “A” wind positive print from Agfa camera original, currently housed with other photographic materials at Appalshop in Whitesburg, Kentucky, near Pine Mountain Settlement School.

For preservation purposes, the Harmon film set given to Pine Mountain Settlement School was deposited in the film vault at Appalshop in Whitesburg, Kentucky, by the School’s Director at the time. The condition of the Pine Mountain film set when stored at Appalshop in the first quarter of the twentieth century was as follows:

16 mm silent EK “A” wind positive print from Agfa camera original. Contained in a 16 mm 7.25″ Dupont rusted brown can. Can label says 1941-1942; EK print date coded tri/tri 1921, 1941, 1961. At the time of storage the print was in stable condition but needed RePlasticizing to lie flat for telecine; few only splices; should be able to make video master w/o preservation first, except for RePlasticizing Treatment; 4% fater RePlas. No vinegar syndrome. [date examined: 2007-01-10]

UPDATE: Film was damaged or lost in the Whitesburg, KY, Appalshop flood of July 28, 2022. Condition pending.
