The images focus on familiar events such as funerals, festivals, church events, families, and folk dancing. The images extend from the 1940s to 1983.

The 4-digit numbers in the captions refer to Berea College’s numbering system that was used when the contact print archive of Pine Mountain Settlement School photographs was created in 1983 by Mary Rogers and staff at Pine Mountain, from selected images in the PMSS photograph collections. The selection of images was part of the SIA (Settlement Institutions of Appalachia) project initiated by Berea College and engaging Settlement institutions in the Southern Appalachians.
