Members of the Metcalf Family (sometimes written Medcalf or Metcalfe) lived in the community of Pine Mountain since very early years, as well as among the student body and workers at Pine Mountain Settlement School.
The family has a long history with the State of Kentucky. The origin of the family name goes back to England and refers to “mete’ and Old English term for “meat” and “cealf” for “calf.” The name first appears in the North Yorkshire dales in the 12th or 13th century.
See the Metcalf Society for a more extensive history of the English origins of the clan. The Society established in 1980 is one of the largest genealogical study groups in England and boasts that, if you are from Yorkshire, there is a Metcalf somewhere in your history.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PMSS COLLECTIONS
Dillard Metcalf (1904-1981) parents were William and Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) Nolan Metcalf. (LIZZIE NOLAN METCALF) A railroad policeman, he married Allene Nolan Metcalf in 1924. Ann Metcalf is their daughter. Both of Ann’s parents attended PMSS in the 1920s. While a PMSS student, Ann’s mother Allene served as a housemaid for Mrs. Ethel de Long Zande, PMSS Co-Director. (ANN METCALF). Dillard helped build the rail tracks for Intermountain Coal & Lumber Company that crossed the School’s property. (ELHANNON MURPHY NOLAN). Dillard’s farm plot is included in a hand-drawn map on this page: “FARM: Shell Farm Field Plan, 1948.” See Dillard & Allene’s wedding photograph (1924) and later commemoration of that wedding in 1974 on the page for NOLAN FAMILY.

Metcalf Family: ADRIAN METCALF CABIN

(Source: Peter Rogers, son of former PMSS Director Burton Rogers and PMSS worker, Mary Rogers.) According to Kentucky Death Records, Adrian Metcalf was born in England. His son was James M. Metcalf (1855-1939) who married Elizabeth Nolen (sic).
