Cora Richardson contributed the following story concerning her great-grandmother, Lizzie (Nolan) Metcalf Scearce, to the PMSS Collection in July 2018. Cora’s mother, Sara Elizabeth (Metcalf) Richardson is the daughter of Dillard and Allene (Nolan) Metcalf.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Nolan was the daughter of Calvin and Sarah Jane (Blanton) Nolan. She was born March 14, 1888, in Harlan County, Kentucky, and died Feb 25, 1932, in Warren County, Ohio, at the age of 43.

After she married (William Metcalf in 1903), had Dillard and then divorced, she married Winfield Scott Scearce…in 1906. She and Winfield had 9 children:

Calvin H. Scearce (1907 – 1987) [SEE GALLERY]
Effie M. (Scearce) Alcorn (1909 – 1971) Married Alfred Alcorn.
Willa Scearce (1911)
Claude W. Scearce (1913 – 1967)
Frank Scearce (1915 – 1989)
William “Tipp” Scearce (1917 – 1974) [SEE GALLERY]
Bassie Scott Scearce (1919- 2003) [SEE GALLERY]
Ina Gladys (Scearce) Durham (1922 – 2007)
Jepp “Strawberry” Scearce Metcalf (1925 – 2005)

Lizzie and Winfield lived in Harlan, Kentucky, for a short while, then moved to Thorn Hill, Tennessee, where Winfield was from. They later moved on to Ohio for work. I am not sure of the dates that they moved. Granny told us that after she (Allene Nolan) and Dillard Metcalf were married, Pa (Dillard) got dressed up and took the train to visit his mother (Lizzie).

[The 1910 U.S. Census indicates that Lizzie, age 21, and Winfield, age 28 and a farmer, were married for 4 years and living in Incline, Kentucky. At that time, they had two children: Calvin, born in Tennesee, and Effie, born in Kentucky.

When Lizzie got sick, her youngest son Jepp was very young, about 6 years old. After Lizzie died, Jepp came to live with Dillard and Allene Metcalf [and] this is how he has the name: Jepp Scearce Metcalf. My grandparents never officially adopted him, he just took their name. My Great Aunt Mae (Edna Mae Metcalf Patterson) and Jepp, whose ages were 8 months apart, were very close as friends.
