ABOUT PINE MOUNTAIN SETTLEMENT SCHOOL BOOKS
The book and periodical collections in the LIBRARY at Pine Mountain Settlement School are not fully inventoried. There are three VERY large BOOK COLLECTIONS housed in the LIBRARY (Boys House). The Periodical Collections are scattered throughout the Archival holdings
The books retained from the Community School LIBRARY, developed by Mary Rogers during the 1950s through the 1980s, included the library of the Boarding School years. The large library of the Boarding School joined the new acquisitions of the Community School, forming an even larger library to maintain. Until the Marietta administration deemed the collection not useful in its present condition and questioned the need to retain the library, the existing books were occassionally loaned to the community using the resources from the school years. The operation of the library was sporatic and poorly utilized. It was then closed and the care of the collection during the ensuing years was sporatic leading to substantial damage to many books in the library. The books deemed not useful for the existing programs at the School and those that were substantially damaged, were eventually sold for nominal amounts or were distributed to the Community surrounding the School. The deselection process was aided by evaluation from George Brosi, father of Sky Brosi Marietta.
Ultimately, books pertaining to ongoing programming were retained from the original library holdings during a large selective reduction of the original library by Sky Marietta, wife of Director Goeff Marietta. For example: Early Childhood Education and Environmental Education books were retained. Additional collections such as the E.J. Carr Botanical Book Collection were retained as a vital resource and as part of the gift of E. J. Carr. Valuable collections and thematic collections such as the Book Collection of Helen de Long and Family, the Book Collection of Helen Kuhn, the Courtney Lomax Moser Book Collection and other special book collections are secured in the samll ANNEX adjacent to the ARCHIVE collections and Reading Room. Recent donations such as that of the Appalachian Book Collection of Libby Culbreth often have their own cabinets in the main Reading Room of the Archive, or have been gathered and stored.
COMMUNITY SCHOOL LIBRARY
As noted above, only a fraction of the large Community School Library books were retained following the closure of the Community School (1949-1955) and the remainder have seen many other reductions as the years have passed. George Brosi, then editor of Appalachian Heritage, and also a book dealer, and father of Sky Marietta, the wife of the School Director, Goeff Marietta, evaluated the PMSS collections and made recommendations regarding collection retentions. In 2018 she reduced the holdings of the legacy library due to no current users, and chose to retain only those books that were related to the Environmental Education program or other active programs for Early Childhood Development. The remainder of the holdings were sold and given away to the Pine Mountain Community. The Environmental Education book retentions were then housed in the Archive room for reference use by the program staff and community, on request. All catalog cards of the original library were retained as a record of the original library and the work of Mary Rogers and staff. The card catalog is located in the upper storage room and should not be discarded.
The E. J. Carr Collection Books resided in the “Plant Center” (Girl’s Industrial) during the early years of the Environmental Education program maintained by Ben Begley. When work began on the creation of an Industrial Kitchen in the “Plant Center” space (Girl’s Industrial), the E.J. Carr Collection of Herbal and Medicinal books were moved to the Archive room in the Library (Boy’s House).
The Elizabeth Culbreth Book Collection is the most recent addition to our special book collections. The Culbreth Collection covers books not included in the general archival holdings that were recommended for purchase or collection to honor “Liz,” or “Libby” as some remember her. Her service on the Pine Mountain Settlement School Board of Trustees for over thirty years, gives her the distinction of the longest serving Board member on the Pine Mountain Settlement School Board of Trustees. It is an honor she also holdsas well at Berea as the longest serving Board member of the Berea College Board of Trustees. Elizabeth retired from the Pine Mountain Settlement School Board in 2018 but retains close ties with her colleagues and with the School.
The Special and Rare Book Collections in the Annex Room are arranged alphabetically by author and number several hundreds of books. They are currently being inventoried. Many of the books are related directly to early Appalachian authors, many are signed editions or have an important relationship to the School. Two separate small collections represent the libraries of Katherine Pettit and that of Helen de Long and family, and include her sister and PMSS Director, Ethel de Long Zande. Original book-plates often unify the donations. See the list below for specific donations and holdings.
A WORK IN PROGRESS
This brief GUIDE to book and periodical collections held by Pine Mountain Settlement School will continue to be a work in progress. As the inventory of the remaining books and periodicals, continues and as the School continues to receive gifts of books, adds new titles, and refines subject areas to meet educational need, the inventory in many of the collections listed, will both increase and decrease.
