Courtney Lomax/Moser Donation 2018

Courtney Lomax/Moser is a member of the Spurlock Family who have close ties with Pine Mountain Settlement School. Courtney’s grandmother, Lula Hale Spurlock was one of the founders of Home Place, a small rural settlement at Ary in Perry County. Her daughter, Courtney’s mother, Mary Hale Spurlock, was a student at Berea College 1960-1964 and a Berea College Country Dancer. Many of the items in the donation come from the collection of Mary Hale.

In 1964 Mary Hale Spurlock and other Berea College Country Dancers were invited to the White House to dance for President John F. Kennedy. A later trip to South and Central America of the Berea College Country Dancers, fostered the life-long interest of Mary Hale and her fellow students in English Country Dancing and Appalachian music and literature.

Pine Mountain is very grateful for this generous donation of books related to Appalachia by Mary Hale Spurlock’s daughter and for the annual gathering of the Spurlock family at Pine Mountain.
