PERIODICALS Appalachian Heritage Inventory
The periodical Appalachian Heritage was born in 1973 at Alice Lloyd College. The magazine moved to the Hindman Settlement School in 1982 and then to Berea College in 1985.

Appalachian Heritage, Fall 1995. [pmss_appal_heritage_ fall_1995_berea]
It served as a venue for unpublished writing including fiction, non-fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, craft essays, visual art and book reviews. The list of contributors grew and over the years included Pulitzer Prize winners, O. Henry Prize winners, winners of the National Book Award and long list of Pushcart Prize winners. The publication has also introduced its readers to new writers and launched many of those into the common cannon of Appalachian writers.
Scanning the issues of Appalachian Heritage reveals a long list of luminaries such as Nikki Giovanni, bell hooks, Jim Wayne Miller, Ann Pancake, James Still, Harriete Arnow, iWendell Berry, and other familiar Appalachian writers.
Pine Mountain has nearly the full run of the publications, but as publishing moved into the digital world and the library at Pine Mountain closed its community access, the issues were not collected. It is hoped that those missing issues may be recovered from private subscribers and that the subscription will be revived for the School.

Appreciation to volunteer Bronwynn Jones for her careful inventory of this periodical and her listing for our record. Bronwynn is the daughter of Dr. Tracy Jones who was a community physician when West Wind was re-purposed for the medical needs of the Pine Mountain community.
