The second Youth Guidance Institute was held at PMSS during the week of August 20.

For the second year the Harlan Kiwanis Club sponsored a summer camp at PMSS for under-privileged Harlan youth.

A 5-day summer conference for 50 young people was held at PMSS by the..

The October 1, 1939, morning service at the Chapel was dedicated to Miss Katherine Pettit, and marked the formal recognition of the tablet placed there in her memory by the Board of Trustees.

The Carnegie Corporation presented PMSS with a Carnegie Music Set, consisting of electric phonograph, approximately 600 phonograph records, a walnut record cabinet, and a 6-volume set of Grover’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

The 1940 calendar, produced in the Print shop, contained 12 John Spelman linoleum cut prints, and poems. Workers and students could purchase calendars for 10 cents each.

December 8, 1939 issue of “Nonesuch” presented itself as an alternative to the Pine Cone, chided the Pine Cone staff for negligence.

The final football game between Far House and the Gentleman’s Club (Boys House?) was scheduled for December 10.

Laurel House (dining facility and girls’ residence) burned January 23, 1940, ignited by a candle being used during a power outage. Fortunately, no lives were lost. Emergency arrangements included the use of Girls’ Industrial Building as kitchen and dining room, moving of classes held in that building to various parts of the school grounds, and shifts in living quarters for boys and girls.

The Board of Trustees, meeting in a special emergency session February 10-11, discussed the building of a dining room – recreation facility with quarters for married workers, and a girls’ dormitory.

Arrangements to secure electrical power from Kentucky Utilities, while keeping the campus plant for auxiliary in case of need, were under discussion.

Executive Committee action approved the completion of the doctor’s house, the reconditioning of Boys’ House, Infirmary, alterations to Zande House and Big Log. Expenditure of up to $35,000.00 for rebuilding Laurel House and up to $20,000.00 for the new girls’ house was approved.

Financial: The 1939-40 Budget estimated Expense of $42,465.20, Income of $33,396.00, Deficit of $9,069.20.

A small house for the doctor (Jubilee House, across from the Infirmary) was finished and occupied.
