BIBLIOGRAPHy Guide
What is a BIBLIOGRAPHY GUIDE? A bibliography guide is essentially a list of key book information (author, title, publisher). It is generally prepared as a guide for research or study and serves as a recommendation (or not!) for sources used or recommended by critics and scholars and others. The BIBLIOGRAPHY is like a reading list or a catalog to a collection of physical books that will aid in the research and study of a subject.
The Pine Mountain BIBLIOGRAPHY GUIDE provides links to systematic lists of books, articles and other sources that are related to particular subjects the researcher is exploring. A BIBLIOGRAPHY can also be an exploration of the physical quality or unique nature of selected books. The contents of a BIBLIOGRAPHY are dependent on the interests of the compiler. As physical items, the BIBLIOGRAPHY can be enumerative (a list) or it can be descriptive (the physical details of books) See particularly the Bibliography Harlan County Kentucky for information on the county in which Pine Mountain is situated and which contains both enumerative and descriptive information on the county.
A BOOK COLLECTION is different than a BIBLIOGRAPHY. The BOOK COLLECTION is different in that it is an object focused list. The BOOK COLLECTION can then be described as something like a “pop-up” book, or a series of uniquly bound books, or a bunch of Song Books. The important thing to know about a BOOK COLLECTION is that it is a curated group of books. It is personal or institutional in nature, such as the E. J. Carr Book Collection, that is focused on his interest in botanical SUBJECTS. A BOOK COLLECTION can also focus on Art Illustration, or on the rarity of items, or local history, on shared interests, first editions, book series, or other specific interests.
Entries also include referrals to online bibliographies that are related to the Pine Mountain Settlement School Collections such as Joshua Wilkey’s blog “Appalachia Reading List 20” in This Appalachia Life. (See link to BIBLIOGRAPHY WEB RESOURCES below – in progress.)
Many of the BIOGRAPHIES included in the Pine Mountain Settlement School Collections website have a bibliography that guides the user to additional sources of information. A BIBLIOGRAPHY, for example, is often located at the end of each BIOGRAPHY of individuals in the Pine Mountain Archive.
Individual BIBLIOGRAPHIES sometimes duplicate entries found in other resources.
