Events:

Traditional:  Fair Day, Mountain Day, Halloween Party, Thanksgiving Peasant Party, Christmas, New Year’s, George Washington Ball, May Day, Commencement.

21 members of the Creech family were present for chapel on Uncle William‘s birthday, October 26, when Judge Lewis Little, sole survivor of the group who chose the PMSS site, was the speaker.

The Guidance Institute was held at Harlan, September 2-5, led by Glyn Morris, former PMSS Director, now Evarts High School Principal.

The Co-op group presented the play “The Devil and Daniel Webster”.

In March the Freshman girls gave a skit and fashion show of party dresses they’d made for about $3.00 each.

In April the Senior class of 11 girls and 4 boys presented “Little Women.”

Buildings and Grounds:

Repairs and remodelling accomplished (facilitated by sawmill supplying PMSS lumber):

Boys Industrial remodelled, terraces enclosed, two gables roofed. Room, and bathroom facilities, added to Little Log cabin. New floor in Boys House porch. Bridge near fountain repaired. West Wind downstairs shower repaired. Workers’ bathroom added at Big Log.

Shell and Metcalfe farm properties rented.

1940 one and one-half ton International truck was replaced.

A telephone line connecting to the forestry office was installed July 12.

Special Gifts: Baby incubator given to hospital, new movie projector given by Mrs. Gratz.

Trips: Folk Dancers to Festival at Stuart Robinson School, performances at Harlan and Evarts High Schools, Loyall Kiwanis Club, Harlan PTA group.

12 students and 4 supervisors attended the inauguration of Governor Earle…

…Clements in Frankfort December 9. The PMSS dance team performed in the Rotunda.

The Senior Class went to Harlan to see “Gone With the Wind.”

Conference of Southern Mountain Workers, March.

Trustees: Edwin Price, Wheelwright, KY (brother-in-law of Margaret Motter) was elected to the Board of Trustees.

Trustees met in New York November 7, 1947, and at PMSS April 2-4, 1948.

Chapel Speakers: Rev. Hunzicker, Evarts; Rev. Bischoff, Red Bird Mission; President Francis S. Hutchins, Berea College (Palm Sunday).

Visitors: Phillip Roettinger, grandson of early Pine Mountain friend and benefactor, Phillip Roettinger, spent 5 days here, doing color film photography.

3 Berea staff members + 1 student presented vocal, violin and piano music.

The regional conference of the Council of the Southern Mountain Workers met at PMSS May 4.
