June 1942 (Arthur W. Dodd, PMSS Interim Director)

[Note: The letters from Arthur W. Dodd, Interim Director, are typewritten carbon copies which are meant for the PMSS Office files. Also, a carbon copy was sent to each member of the Board. The original documents were sent to James S. Crutchfield, President, PMSS Board of Trustees.]

June 1942

[June-001] June 23, 1942. Three-page letter to Mr. James S. Crutchfield, Pennsylvania Lines Produce Terminal, Pittsburgh PA, from Arthur W. Dodd, PMSS Interim Director. Events “since Mr. [Glyn] Morris’ departure on May 15th”: Dr. Caudill, State Epidemiologist and his staff ran cultures on the herd and PMSS summer workers to determine the source of strep throat cases in visitors. Last winter, three cows showed positive cultures. Dodd quotes from a letter from the State Department of Health, advising pasteurization equipment. If this isn’t possible then the entire herd must be replaced.

[June-002] (Page 2) Dodd describes steps he will take; how the infection is contracted. “Mr. and Mrs. Morris also felt that some such step should be taken, because the serving of raw milk to a number of people is always potentially hazardous.” He reports on the Guidance Institute; Kiwanis Camp (40 underprivileged children), directed by Mrs. [Birdena] Bishop and four students; garden and canning.

[June-001] (Page 3) Mrs. Ball of Muncie, IN, donated jars for canning. Three staff are attending summer school: Miss Grant (Union Theological Seminary), Mr. [Boone] Callahan (Bradley Institute), Mr. [August] Angel (technical school in Cleveland, OH).

July 1942

[July-001] July 13, 1942. (Page 1; subsequent pages are missing). To Crutchfield from Dodd. A representative of a dairy supply house, Cherry Burrell Corp., visited PMSS to talk with Dodd about a pasteurization unit. He felt that PMSS “would not be able to get a priority rating because of the large amount of metal involved.” Dodd lists the items needed, totaling about $1,600 plus adjustments to the milk house. He states the cost and downside of replacing the herd and how the infected cows’ milk is now being used. He asks the Board whether it is best to replace the infected cows, possibly selling them to a local dairy that does pasteurization. ….

[July-002] July 31, 1942. To Crutchfield from Dodd. Mentions Kiwanis Camp and canning. Rev. Eugene Rainey’s church groups from Everts will stay a week at PMSS. Repair work on the Infirmary and Boys House was done but Far House repairs have been postponed due to “shortage of time, money, and manpower.” Staffing problems: Mr. Angel voluntarily enlisted in the Army Air Corps; Dr. and Mrs. Beals will be leaving. The three infected cows “will be eliminated permanently next week,” which will create a milk shortage.
[July-003] (Page 2) A “country party” which included the community,  is planned for Mr. and Mrs. [William] Webb and family when they visit on August 2nd.
