The two-page PMSS Calendar 1953 is, in part, a repeat of the 1947 calendar which featured a poem by Ruth E. Campbell and a painting by Abby Winch Christensen, a former worker at Pine Mountain Settlement School. Christensen’s painting captured the bountiful array of mountain laurel that grows in abundance in the Pine Mountain area.
A third use of the Abby Winch Christensen painting was made in 1955 by a third PMSS Calendar. However, the 1955 Calendar used an image of the Mountain ballad “The Riddle Song” in combination with the painting.
The poem by Ruth Campbell does not appear in this later 1953 calendar, nor in the 1955 Calendar. Instead, Burton Rogers, PMSS director at the time, provides information on updates at the School. He advises that the School, now under the supervision of Berea College, has replaced the boarding school program with a co-operative school program joining with the Harlan County school system. He announces the creation of a new hospital and an experimental farm program at the School, and solicits donations to the School.
