The PMSS Calendar 1953 is, in part, a repeat of the 1947 calendar. The painting of Abbie [Abby] Winch Christensen, a former worker at Pine Mountain Settlement School, captured the bountiful array of mountain laurel the grows in abundance in the Pine Mountain area.
A third use of the Abbie Winch Christensen painting was made in 1955 when a third PMSS Calendar used the same image, but at this time, used an image of the Mountain ballad “The Riddle Song” in combination with the painting.
The poem by Ruth Campbell does not appear in this later 1953 calendar, nor in the 1955 Calendar. Instead, Burton Rogers, the Director at the time, provides information on updates at the School. He advises that the School, now under the supervision of Berea College, has replaced the boarding school program with a co-operative school program joining with the Harlan County school system. He announces the creation of a new hospital and an experimental farm program that are now features of the School, and solicits donations to the School.
