1938 PMSS CALENDAR
TAGS: 1938 Calendar, linoleum prints, John Spelman III, artists-in-residence, donors, printshop
The 1938 Calendar is a compilation of small linoleum prints by the artist-in-residence in 1937, John Spelman III. Many of the houses and cabins may be identified with structures on the Pine Mountain Settlement School campus.
Several calendars have been collected by Pine Mountain for the year 1938 but this particular copy is an exceptionally clean and careful printing of the calendar. It was sent to the School in November of 2009 by Carole S. Macklin who was a colleague of Louise Snyder who taught at Pine Mountain in the 1930s. Both Carole and Louise later taught at an elementary school in Wren, Ohio, and because Carole taught art, her friend Louise thought she might appreciate the calendar’s art and craftsmanship.
In 2009 Carol thought of Pine Mountain and sent the calendar along to the School, describing her donation as a “beautiful, magnificent hand-made calendar” that she wished for the School “…to accept into your historical artifacts …I hope you will appreciate it as much as I have.” We greatly appreciate Carole’s donation and her shared joy in the work of John Spelman III. We are pleased to share this calendar with you and hope it brings you as much joy as Carole seems to have found over the many years she kept such careful care of John Spelman III’s art and the craft of the Pine Mountain School Print Shop.
