The 1956 PMSS Calendar is the creation of Mary Rogers wife of Burton Rogers, a former Director of Pine Mountain Settlement. The calendar drawings are typical of Mary’s work. Her drawings, easily identified by their elegant lines and often transcendent themes, can be found on promotional literature, letterheads, brochures, and other public literature of the School. Her work is also found in illustrations she provided for various authors of books and periodical articles. Her lyrical style and whimsical choice of the subject have been, through the years, both captivating and effective in engaging a large following. Deeply religious, Mary was the daughter of an English church Vicar and he often carried those beliefs into her work. She is well-known in Kentucky for her work in founding the Environmental Education Program at Pine Mountain Settlement.
Mary Rogers, the director of the School’s Nativity Play and a collector of local and regional music and ballads, was, for most of her thirty or more years at Pine Mountain, adept at weaving music and dance into her illustrations and her life.
