ETHEL De LONG ZANDE Correspondence Guide, 1913-1928

The ETHEL De LONG ZANDE CORRESPONDENCE GUIDE provides a list of administrative and personal correspondence not included in the Kendall Bassett donation of family correspondence.

There are two main collections of correspondence associated with Ethel de Long-Zande at Pine Mountain Settlement School. The first captures the essence of her early life and family as well as her personal reflections on the assignment as Co-Founder of the new institution, Pine Mountain Settlement School in Harlan County, Kentucky. As the new school’s Co-Director, Ethel de Long essentially coordinated the educational and much of the administrative side of the new School. The work and writing of Co-Director, Katherine Pettit, frequently overlapped with that of Ethel de Long in the formative years. Katherine had a special talent for crossing all levels of the local culture, and Ethel also showed considerable interest in descriptive writing but was more focused on education and on promotional fund-raising material.  Sometimes the work of the two overlapped, and it is difficult to determine the writer. The early administrative papers reflect the shared areas of development and also the strong level of commitment of both leaders.

The earliest collection of material associated with de Long is that found associated with what is known as the de Long-Zande Papers, gathered by family friend and former Pine Mountain staff member, Kendall Bassett. This discreet body of material captures the early years of Ethel de Long-Zande and her family, her personal letters, and her early influences. The large body of personal papers provides a framework for the administrative work completed by Ethel de Long -Zande in her short life at the School (1913-1928).  Early and intimate personal reflections are found in Ethel’s correspondence with her family, friends, and professional influencers. The large collection, referred to as the Kendall Bassett collection of de Long-Zande Papers, is a large body of early family material gathered, but also includes Ethel’s early writing and many clues to her thought processes and influences. Bassett donated the collection to Pine Mountain, but only recently (c. 2010) has the Bassett Collection come to the School, where it was placed in a fire-safe filing cabinet in the Pine Mountain Settlement School Archive. The early personal, family, and friend correspondence is a valuable background to Ethel de Long-Zande’s work and her early influences and influencers. The collection also contains early writing, schoolwork, and the history of the de Long family. The voluminous papers gathered by Kendall Bassett sometimes overlap those found in the general SIA [Settlement Institutions of Appalachia] PMSS Archive and other places in collections related to ETHEL de LONG-ZANDE Director materials.
