MARY ROCKWELL HOOK Correspondence Guide 1914-1977

Mary Rockwell Hook maintained a correspondence with many workers at the School, with community members, and especially with the Board of Trustees.  Hook served as the Primary Architect for Pine Mountain Settlement School and also served on the School’s Board of Trustees. For these reasons, her correspondence is scattered. However, the bulk of her correspondence is filed under “Board of Trustees Correspondence” in BOXES 17-19 and is organized by year in the collection microfilmed by SIA and Berea College in 1983. Correspondence may also be found under the Director’s files.

Note that the formal BOT correspondence does not begin until 1924. The earliest (1913-1923)  years are included in the individual Director’s Correspondence with various workers, visitors, and Board members.

Some additional correspondence of Mary Rockwell Hook may also be included in planning documents for the two satellite settlements: the Medical Settlement at Big Laurel and the Line Fork Settlement.  Related correspondence from Hook may also be found associated with the files for individual buildings that she designed. See Series 10: BUILT ENVIRONMENT and GUIDE to BUILT ENVIRONMENT. Duplicate copies of Mary Rockwell Hook’s correspondence is also scattered among the large body of material associated with her Board of Trustees activity.

Scattered correspondence may also be found under Series 09 Staff Workers MARY ROCKWELL HOOK in the filing cabinets in the Boy’s House archive Annex Room.

Scanning of individual documents is on-going.
