Marguerite Butler’s January 1919 letter to her mother (#046) described the burning of the first School House. Among the children who died in the fire was Alman (Almond?) Huff, who was described as Becky May’s brother. Later, Butler’s letter to her sister tells of the community residents who came to PMSS in the fire’s aftermath, including the Huff family:
The whole Huff family came and Mr. Huff was lovely. He insisted the bones be buried here, for Almond was our boy. Mrs. Huff said her one boy brought her only trouble and Almond was always good but she was happy she at least knew where Almond was. 1919 MARGUERITE BUTLER LETTERS, #061.
A list (page 3) of items & exhibitors at Community Fair Day included “53. Becky Jane Huff, gingerbread.” 1919 COMMUNITY FAIR DAY.
Marguerite Butler, in a letter to her family dated February 24, 1915, describes bath night for the little girls under her supervision as a housemother. Some of them signed their names to the letter, including Becky May (Huff). 1915 MARGUERITE BUTLER LETTERS, #22.
Becky May Huff’s handwritten letter of August 3, 1918, is among the children’s writings that were saved by PMSS teachers and staff. CHILDREN WRITING I, #006.
In Becky May Huff (Sexton)’s evaluation of her PMSS education, she writes that she attended PMSS 1914-1926 at ages 7-19. She attended Berea College and is married and a housekeeper with one child. She wrote of her opinions and suggestions. BOARDING SCHOOL Alumni Reflections on Their Education 1936.
Betty Huff is among the students in a photograph of the 1948 GRADUATING CLASS (see Gallery below).
Betty Huff and Gordon Nichols of Goshen, New York, were listed as attendees of the Homecoming on August 8-9, 1981. 1981 ALUMNI RELATIONS.
In a letter written in Spring 1916(?) to her sister, Marguerite Butler mentions two new students, Andy Turner and Carmen Huff, both age 15. She writes,
They are here on trial for a month having promised not to leave the school land so as to get “nary a drop of moonshine,” for they have been drinking frightfully. Miss Pettit is taking charge of their physical training and care, taking charge of their baths, etc., but has handed them to me for mental and moral training, They are two of the most interesting boys I ever worked with and I do think there are great prospects for them. 1916 MARGUERITE BUTLER LETTERS, #027.
As Alice Cobb prepared to leave her PMSS teaching position in June 1937, she wrote a letter describing her program at the DIvide, Kentucky, Sunday School. The letter was addressed to Edith Cold, another PMSS worker. Cobb listed three of the Sunday School attendees as Sarah Jane Huff and Goldie Huff, “Two quiet little girls who come occasionally”, and Mr. Bentley Huff. ALICE COBB STORIES Handing over Divide Sunday School….
Matthew Boggs, a longtime PMSS worker (1951-2014), was married to Mae Huff Boggs. They had 2 children, a boy and a girl, and lived in the Cabin on PMSS campus. BOGGS FAMILY.
