1948 GRADUATING CLASS: Excerpts, Senior Calendar of 1948-1949

SEPTEMBER

5 —  Registration Day. Freshmen arrive, bag and baggage.

6 —  Picnic Lunch at Big Log Lean-to. First Dancing Party.

7 —  Classes begin.

11 —  “The Lodger” Movie about a wayfaring stranger who terrified West Wind girls.

12 —  First Chapel Service with a talk by Mr. [H.R.S.] Benjamin and special anthem by the choir.

22 —  No baths! Water low in the reservoir.

25 —  Heigh-ho, Come to the Fair. Richard Chase here. A Santa-climax to the fair as St. NIck arrives at Pine Mountain prematurely in movie, “House on 34th Street.”

26 —  Sermon by Dr. Luther Ambrose, Berea College. Hike to Jack’s Gap. Vespers piano recital by Mr. [Arthur] Dodd.

29 —  Senior class meeting for organization.

OCTOBER

1 —  Trip to Kingsport, Tennessee, to see Freedom Train.

3 —  Geese first seen heading south. Seven seniors also try their wings.

4 —  Sans seven seniors.

7 —  Rain !!!!

8 —  First Senior Supper. Stir-off at Henry Creech‘s.

9 —  “The Razor’s Edge.”

10 —  Girls vs. boys in ball game.

13 —  First edition of THE PINE CONE. [for that year?]

15 —  Mountain Day and dancing party.

16 —  Playground Party. Mrs. Barry and Mr. Scoville, here.

17 —  Vespers talk by Mr. Scoville [Alice Berry’s father] on nature. More rain!! and then snow!!!

25-27 — Miss Gadd and Miss Averil here for folk dancing.

30 —  Mrs. McLean here for dancing party.

31 —  Chapel talk by Dr. McLean, Transylvania College. Candlelight Vespers. Boys fight forest fires.

NOVEMBER

2 —  Election Day. Dewey wins, but only at Pine Mountain.

5 —  Co-op Play.

6 —  Hallowe’en Party and Pie Supper, First issue of THE SPECTATOR, weekly news supplement of THE PINE CONE.

11 —  Armistice Day. Announcement of Thanksgiving Vacation.
