1950

028-028b August 4, 1950. Three-page letter to PMSS Director Burton Rogers from Louise Fliermans “en route to Olivet, Ill.” [028] She writes “I can’t tell you how much we’ve enjoyed the summer. It’s always good to get back to Pine Mountain.” She then tells of the staff arrangements as they await Mrs. [Georgia] Dodd’s arrival, mentioning Dorothy [Nace], Mrs. Holsinger, [028a-028b] Janice, Ruth Wilder, Rita Lewis.

029-029a August 17, 1950. Two-page letter to Fliermans from Rogers, thanking her for her summer help. “The Chapel roof and Laurel House painting and the School House projects are all moving along…” Mentions Georgia Dodd’s arrival. “With deepest thanks for your services here and appreciation of all you have done and meant to Pine Mountain.”

033-033a N.D. Two-page letter to Rogers from Fliermans on stationary from the Hotel Abraham Lincoln, Springfield, IL, [033] where she is attending a Homemaking Teachers Conference. She informed Rogers that Gladys [Hill] and Barbara Wilder improved the little Chapel room. [033a] “We’re missing Pine Mt., but it’s nice to have part of it with us — Jean Cornett. She seems to be adjusting quite well….” 

034 September 28, 1950. To Fliermans from Rogers with updates concerning PMSS and his son, Peter Rogers. “There has been much exclaiming about the good job you did at Boys House his summer. … We have enrolled 189 [students] for the first month.”

035-035a N.D. Two-page letter to Burton and Mary Rogers from Fliermans, who thanks him for the book of Christmas carols; mentions construction of her house; her schoolwork; visiting PMSS.

1951

037 N.D. To Burton and Mary Rogers from Fliermans, referring to her PMSS visit and enclosing a check.

036 November 26, 1951. To Fliermans from Rogers, commenting on her PMSS visit. Encloses a receipt for her “generous contribution. This is all the more appreciated from one who will always have a real place in Pine Mountain.”

038 December 6, 1951. To Fliermans from Rogers, thanking her for a “still more generous contribution…. It seems very much like going the extra mile when one who has given so much of herself on the staff in the past is now helping us so much in this other important way.”

1952

039 January 30, 1952. To Fliermans from Rogers, welcoming her and her mother to visit again.

040-040a March 5, 1952. Two-page letter to Fliermans from Rogers, asking that, if she visits this summer, she will substitute at Laurel House while Miss Turner is on vacation. He assures her the summer will be “very quiet” except for a few guests and probably campus boarders; the Hospital may possibly “be cooking for itself.” He thanks her for the items she sent to Peter. 

041 March 15, 1952. To Rogers from Fliermans, who declines his invitation to visit since she will be attending school this summer. She and her mother may be visiting PMSS in June.

042 March 19, 1952. To Fliermans from Rogers, welcoming her to PMSS in June and regretting she won’t be staying to work. 

043-043a May 28, 1952. Two-page letter to Rogers from Fliermans in Danville, IL, who offers to send homemaking textbooks for 7th & 8th grades, titled Our Share In the Home, by Baxter, Justin and Rust. Her family is now in their new home. She won’t be able to visit PMSS due to “excess work to be done around our house.” She sends a “hello” to Fern [Hayes], Ruby and Mrs. Holsinger.

044-044a-b June 19, 1952. Two-page letter to Fliermans from Rogers. [044] He explains that the books have to be State-approved before he can accept them. He may find he can use them this fall, if she can hold them for him. He tells of his vacation dates; asks if she can get an Electrolux cleaner for the Hospital.
[044a-b] Attached undated note to Rogers from Fliermans, reporting that the cleaner is being shipped. She may be visiting PMSS with a friend.

045 June 28, 1952. To Fliermans from Rogers, thanking her for sending the cleaner. He regrets he will miss her when she visits.

046 July 2, 1952. To Rogers from Fliermans, who hopes the Rogers’ will visit her in Danville en route to Connecticut.

047 July 5, 1952. To Fliermans from Rogers, who regrets that Danville is too far west for the Rogers’ to visit; suggests a future weekend visit.

048 N.D. To Burton and Mary Rogers from Louise & C.B. Fliermans, commenting on having visited PMSS again; regrets they missed seeing the Rogers; welcome them to Danville for a weekend visit.

049 September 5, 1952. To Fliermans from Rogers, with updates about PMSS: “Ninth grade is now established, with 15 enrolled. The total enrollment is about 215. Turkey Fork is now consolidated. We have six teachers, and one of them is now our Principal.”

1953

050 N.,D. [Added notation: “May 11, 1953”] To Burton and Mary Rogers from Louise and Carl B. Fliermans, with comments about “the memorial for Gladys [Gladys Hill Memorial Fund].”

051 May 18, 1953. To Fliermans from Rogers, who was away “getting Mary’s sister, who arrived in this country a week ago today for two months’ visit here….”

1954

052 [Date stamp: March 15, 1954, Danville, IL.] Address side of postcard to Mr. and Mrs. Burton Rogers.
052a N.D. Message side of postcard to the Rogers from Fliermans, telling them she will be visiting PMSS for 2 or 3 days in April, bringing Carl B, her sister, and a teacher-friend.

053 [Date stamp: March 30, 1954, Danville, IL.] Address side of postcard to Mr. and Mrs. Burton Rogers.

055-056 May 5, 1954. Two-page letter on “Danville High School” stationery to the Rogers from Fliermans, expressing appreciation for her PMSS visit and enclosing a donation. 

057 May 14, 1954. Two-page letter to Fliermans from Rogers, thanking her for her contribution to the Gladys Hill Memorial. He describes plans for a Gladys Hill Memorial Room and changes to classes in the Schoolhouse and Boys Industrial Building. [Image of page 2 is missing.]

059 July 28, 1954. To Fliermans from Rogers, thanking her for sending the books. “You will see and use our new road next time you come. It is coming along rapidly now.”

060 N.D. To “Dear Ones” from Fliermans, thanking them for “the lovely notes.” She will finish her Master’s in mid-summer and hopes to visit PMSS to rest, possibly learn to weave, and help with chores.
