ALEXANDER ELLIOT McINTYRE Jr Student 1931-1936

 Early Years

By the time of of the 1940 U.S. Census, Alex Elliot McIntyre, Jr., was living with family on the North Fork of the Kentucky River (Mason’s Creek), just across the swinging bridge from the small railroad community of Viper (Perry County), Kentucky.

Born in 1919, “Alex,” as he was known, was the youngest of eight children. His employment in 1940 was listed as a truck driver for a wholesale grocery company. His older sister Maude, worked at the same place as a stenographer. His brother, Estill, was an elementary school teacher in Kentucky Public Schools. Another brother, Lawrence D. McIntyre, and his family lived nearby on Big Branch and worked as a coal loader in a mine. His other siblings were Arthur, Wilma, Shirley Fay, and Richmond. Richmond was married and working at a lumber mill until the United States entered World War II and he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp to train as a pilot. See Richmond McIntyre’s biography here.

ALEXANDER ELLIOT McINTYRE Jr: Pine Mountain

Both Alexander Elliot McIntyre and his brother, Richmond, began attending the Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1931. Richmond left the school after a year, but Alex continued his studies until he graduated in 1936.

Besides his work and studies and Pine Mountain, material in the PMSS Archives show that he was active with the student literary publication, The Pine Cone. The May 1934 issue indicates that he was a reporter in charge of the School News. By February 1936, he was listed as Editor of The Pine Cone

After his student years at Pine Mountain, he revisited the School in 1983. The Alumni Newsletter of that year mentions his name and career:

It was really great to see several first timers this year: Don Thompson, brought by brother Buster Blackson; Mary Sue Baker Hamilton; Charlsie Vaughn Stearly; Maxine Holbrook Gallez; Weese Hamis; and Alex McIntyre to name a few. Alex still looks distinguished after an illustrious career in Kentucky politics.

ALEXANDER ELLIOT McINTYRE Jr: After Pine Mountain

On March 26, 1942, soon after the United State entered World War II, Alex enlisted in the U.S. Army. He began his training at Fort Thomas, Kentucky, located across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. His civilian occupation at the time was recorded under “Managers & Officials.” (On his gravestone are the words, “Capt US Army, World War II.”)

Nine months after his enlistment he married Felicia Rae (Rogers) McIntyre (1922-2019) on December 14, 1941. They raised six children: John Kevin McIntyre (who died at age 5 in 1969), Alois Ann McIntyre (Moore), Dr. Deborah Louise McIntyre (Roark), Dr. Alex Brian McIntyre, Dan Colin McIntyre, and James Keith McIntyre.

According to Felicia McIntyre’s obituary,

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stanton, Kentucky, and the first woman Elder in her church. She was voted Mother of the Year for Kentucky and recognized by Governor Martha Layne Collins. She was an artist…[and] a strong, kind, loving, caring person….
