SUMMARIES: 1925-1926 D.A.R. Correspondence
01 January 19, 1925. Mrs. E.F. Goodson, State Chairman of Schools and Colleges, Kentucky to Ethel de Long Zande, PMSS. Goodson requests PMSS exhibit for State Convention scheduled for March 22-24 in Louisville. She also asks for a PMSS Report for 1925,
02 January 25, 1926 Ethel de Long Zande to Mrs. E.F. Goodson. Reply asking for 1/2 hour on the Convention program for English Country Dancing, ballads and crafts by PMSS children. She stresses that the School is looking for revival of culture and craft and not a factory.
03-03a (04) June 24, 1926. Evelyn K. Wells to Mrs. Null and Mrs. Potts thanking them for the scholarship money for the School and describes the programs and social culture of the School.
SUMMARIES: 1929 D.A.R. Correspondence
05 January 18, 1929. Angela Melville (for Katherine Pettit) to Mrs. Herbert W. Wright, Chairman of Benevolence, thanking her and the Junior Guild of Western Reserve Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, for the donation of clothing for new babies in the surrounding community. She describes the good work being done by Dr. Withington at the Big Laurel Medical Center and the recent celebration of Christmas there. Also noted is the enrollment of the PMSS School, which is “over 100 children in grades from 5th through third year of high school.”
06 June 22, 1929. PMSS to Mrs Clarence F. Wickham at “The Pines” and leader of the Connecticut DAR Chapter, thanking her for the offer of donation of baby clothing and books. She notes the need for the infants, but notes that “second-hand” books for classrooms are not of high use as the School is supplying the necessary books for specific classes. Literature about the School is enclosed in the letter.
07 June 19, 1929. Letter from Edith M. Wickham [Mrs. Clarence H. Wickham], Hartford, Connecticut who asks how the Connecticut DAR Chapter can help the School. She notes that “We are stressing Patriotic Education to the best of our ability…” and wonders what donations the Chapter might send to PMSS. She also notes that the chapter wants to continue the scholarships to the School at Pine Mountain.
08 May 3, 1929. Mrs F. J. Huwen, Regent of the D.A.R. in Glen Ellyn, IL. writes that she has been
“…asked to broadcast over WBBM, Chicago on the Daughters of the American Revolution hour, June 24, using as my subject the “Mountain Whites.” I am scurrying around for any information that is available. If you have any data that [you] think might be of service to me I should greatly appreciate it. I am going to stress the obligation the rest of the U.S. has in the matter of helping to provide education and its attendant opportunities to the mountain region.”
09 May 20, 1929. Angela Melville replies to Mrs. F.J. Huwen that ” … the mountain problem is a big one and not to be dealt with from the angle of any one section.” She advises that Mrs. Huwen to consult the writings of John C. Campbell and Horace Kephart for “…information on the problem as a whole.” She further adds: “
May I suggest, without offense, that a title ‘Mountaineers’ would be better than ‘Mountain Whites’. There is something derogatory in the latter term and it is not really applicable as, in these remote mountains at any rate, the coming of the negro is a matter of the last ten years. The mountains were settled by pioneers, one-hundred-fifty years ago and are populated by their descendants who are naturally whites. To those of us who work in the mountains, the term “Mountain Whites” is objectionable. I am sure you will not mind my mentioning this. I know that this term is used considerably by people in the outside world who are not familiar with conditions.”
She adds, ” Berea College publishes a very interesting quarterly called Mountain Life and Work, And if you would write to the secretary of that magazine, Berea College, Berea, KY I am sure they will be glad to send you, at cost, back copies of their publication, which also could give you much information of an up to the date nature on the development of various parts of the Appalachian Mountains.”
