July 2, 1947. Copy of typewritten form letter on PMSS letterhead to Allen Eugene Long, Barridge, Ky., from Arthur W. Dodd, Principal, PMSS, who invites Allen Long to PMSS in September and provides the start date. Dodd asks that Long pay a $1.00 breakage deposit when he arrives, bring his “most recent Sugar Stamp,” and only the clothing listed in the catalog. He encloses a medical examination blank and a dentist’s certificate form to be filled out by the doctor and dentist. “If you are found to need glasses, or to have tonsils or appendix removed, it will be necessary for you to take care of this before you come because we are unable to do such work at the School.” Long must send an entrance fee of $10.00 to save his space.
December 30, 1947. Carbon copy of a typewritten letter to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Long in Vicco, Ky., from the Principal, sending “a joint report on Allen’s progress. The student writes a self-appraisal in the form of a letter and I will supplement this with additional data so you may get a clear picture of his development.” About Long, the Principal writes that he “has made a satisfactory adjustment” to PMSS and is “well-behaved at all times…”
MISSING
-018 December 18, 1947. Four-page handwritten letter to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Long from Allen Long, describing the progress of his studies at PMSS. 015 “We have to make three copies. One is a rough draft, another is kept on file by Mr. Dodd, while the last one is sent to you all.” 016 He writes about his classes in science, math, Bible, and civics. “In Bible [class] I never had it before. So it was hard for about the first month. But now it is one of my most interesting subjects….” 017 He continues describing his classes: English, woodworking, auto mechanics, and print shop. 018 The event which has meant more to me this term is the stir-off. I had never been to one before, so it was very pleasant going to one. Leisure activities include games, study, and woodworking.
June 8. 1948. Carbon copy of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Long in Rockwood, Tennessee, from the Principal, reporting that Allen was promoted to Sophomore year of high school and enclosing his written evaluation. “Allen made excellent progress in his industrial work this year, doing well in the Print Shop and also in his work with Mr. Cheney. He has made satisfactory gains in each of his studies. He is intelligent and conscientious and very promising as a citizen and as a student.”
-022 May 20, 1948. Three-page handwritten letter to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Long in Rockwood, Tennessee, describing the progress of his studies at PMSS. 020 “I have more concern for people than I used to…. I tried to cooperate and see other people’s side of things which I never did before.” He tells about his work in printing, the barn, woodworking; he has gained about 24 pounds. 021 He describes what he has learned in his other studies: science, Bible, math, civics, English, woodwork. 022 He lists his goals.
August 31, 1948. Typewritten letter from T.R. Eutsler, Superintendent, (on letterhead for Rockwood [TN] Public Schools), requesting “a transcript of the high school credits earned in your school by Allen Long.”
