STURGILL Family, 1934-1949

Members of the Sturgill Family lived in the community of Pine Mountain since very early years. Several were among the student body at Pine Mountain Settlement School.

Sturgill Family: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PMSS COLLECTIONS

Hattie Sturgill was Master of Ceremonies in a Community Group Assembly in which she introduced each of seven students describing the work of the Community Group and the Co-op program at Pine Mountain. Their narratives were to accompany a film made by Virginia and Ray Garner, who were contracted through the Harmon Foundation to film the unique educational program activities at the School. COMMUNITY GROUP ASSEMBLY May 20, 1942.

Hattie Sturgill wrote a scene for the Co-op play, “Cooperation Around the World,” which was reprinted in CONIFER with the title, “Kagawa in the Slums.” CONIFER – 1941, page 17.

The program for the Class of 1942 Commencement lists Hattie Sturgill as one of the students who participated in the ceremony. 1942 COMMENCEMENT.

Leone Sturgill, Senior, wrote “Fair Day Program” for The Pine Cone, October 1948, pages 13-14. 1938 COMMUNITY FAIR DAY.

Raymond Sturgill and Clayton Sturgill are depicted in a photograph of the PMSS 1949 graduating class in CONIFER 1949. (See image conifer_1949_006.jpg in Gallery below.) They are also listed as members of the Class of 1949. 1949 GRADUATING CLASS.

An unsigned letter [image 021] written to the Arthur W. Dodd family and dated January 10, 1952, reports that “Raymond Sturgill was slightly wounded in Korea in November but was soon back at the front.” ARTHUR W. DODD CORRESPONDENCE.
