December, 1955
“MORE that the three R’s!”

Teachers “give their pupils a good foundation in basic skill subjects — reading, spelling, arithmetic, writing … but a great deal more! … music, books, and slides … skills of the hand … sports … recreation.

Teachers felt they needed additional help and searched for a man and woman who could fill a “serious lack of vocational and recreational offerings.” A man was hired a month ago who started woodworking, playground activities, and community “sings.” Volunteer staff members are teaching girls basic sewing.

The cost of two new staff members strained PMSS budget, requiring a request of donors for $6,000 this year.

Gratefully,
[signed] Burton Rogers, Director

Contents; Excerpts from several letters that Burton Rogers received from students pointing out the need for more classroom space than they have in Burkham Schoolhouse.

“Following plans drawn by the principal and teachers, alterations were made in the Draper Building (known informally as Boys Industrial) and the home economics building, and this fall, classes were about to move into greatly enlarged quarters. The Harlan County Board of Education approved the changes and provided sturdy new tables and chairs for the primary room in the place of the old-style desks….the Burkham building is used by the 9th grade and contains the library and assembly room as well as space for special projects.”

Lunch is eaten in the Laurel House dining room in two shifts totaling 220 students. Rogers describes other activities in the dining room. The room features posters and holiday table decorations made by students. “Nourishing meals are planned and served with imagination. Lunch is a pleasant and happy interlude.”

School children and older young people join in folk dancing on Friday nights.

Rogers then lists excerpts of several students’ thank-you letters for solving the space problem.

Sincerely, [signed] Burton Rogers, Director
