WILLIAM HAYES:

The following remarks by William Hayes were made during the late months of WWII and include the names of two of his brothers. One additional brother, Silven Hayes does not appear on the list as he was still missing  and had not been declared deceased when the list was compiled.  Also, Bill Blair’s name is  missing as is David Martin and Columbus Creech and many others as they had not yet registered or were still enrolled at PMSS.

Further, there are no women included in the list and there were many from the School who served in the War efforts. Particularly, Stella Taylor, Mable Mullins, also contributed to the War efforts.also later enrollees in the war effort.

TRANSCRIPTION: Remarks

It seems very appropriate at this time to announce the names of our Pine Mountain students who are in our United States armed forces. These boys are helping to protect our Country and its possessions. In nearly every branch of military service, Pine Mountain boys are playing their part in this allied struggle for peace. May we all wish these boys God’s speed in our united effort to win final victory.

May the united spirit of these boys be carried to every front. May the Democracy for freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the freedom of religion be protected.

As President Lincoln said in his second Annual Message to Congress in 1862 —  “We  shall nobly  save or meanly lose the last best hope of Earth.” But today it is not clear that a peace soundly and intelligently based upon this necessity is as Abraham Lincoln put it,  “It is the man and woman of this generation who will nobly save or meanly lose it.”
