May 9, 1917 [2 pages]. Katherine Pettit to Mrs. J. R. Morton, Lexington, KY. Tells about her barn job and cows; planting crops by Mr. Deschamps, Mr. Zande and the children ; new Laurel House dining room; Uncle William’s meeting in Louisville concerning the road; visiting photographers, including Mr. Sumner Appleton of Boston, connected with Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities.
Handwritten notation in margin, first page: “Please excuse the nibs [ink smears?].” Notation, second page: “My love for Buddie. I would like to know what he and Jim have to say now.” [004-005]

Sent money for Red Cross of Harlan; croquet net arrived; fundraising efforts by Miss [Angela] Melville, Celia Cathcart and Ethel de Long; describes hauling and road maintenance difficulties, showing need for new road. August 21, 1917 [2 pages]. Katherine Pettit to “Buddie” (Mr. Bernard Gratz Norton), Harbor Springs, MI. Reminiscences about her summer visit to Michigan; fundraising for the road; donations by Harlan mine operators; progress of schoolhouse; Laurel House; Miss Fawcett’s work with chickens and cows; canning; reservoir. Handwritten notation on second page: “Has your mother seen Mrs. Freeman – [?indecipherable]” [007-008]
November 15, 1917 [2 pages]. Katherine Pettit to Mrs. J.R. Norton, Lexington, KY. Thanks Mrs. Norton for her week’s stay; planting raspberries; making gift boxes for new babies; moving to new schoolhouse in December; children anecdotes; new town of Lynch; Catholic School in Corbin.
