WOOTON (WOOTEN) Family

Members of the Wooton Family (or Wooten Family) lived in the community of Pine Mountain since very early years. Several were among the student body and workers at Pine Mountain Settlement School. The name has been used for the town of Wooton (Leslie County), Kentucky, and Wooton Creek as listed in the first stanza of the poem, “The Mountain Creeks of Kentucky” by Angela Melville, a PMSS worker (1916-1920) and associate director (1928-1930).

Both names “Wooton” and “Wooten” are documented in the PMSS Collections. It is not known if Wooten is a family separate from the Wooton Family, a misspelling, or an alternate spelling.
