The following GOVERNANCE document details Marian Kingman’s 1977 views on the philosophy and objectives of PMSS in 1977. The reflection was solicited by the Board of Trustees (BOT) of PMSS and came about while she was serving on the Board of the Pine Mountain Settlement School.

Marian Kingman’s trusteeship came after her service as a staff member of the School in the early years of the institution and following a long career on the faculty at Berea College in the Home Economics Department.  In 1977 she joined other Board members who were asked to submit a statement on the philosophy and objectives of Pine Mountain Settlement School as they understood it. Her response and those of her colleagues provide a window into the values and effective guardianship of the institution in the 1970s. A transcription of her response follows:

Philosophy and Objectives of the Pine Mountain Settlement School

A. Philosophy

  1. Recognition of the need for broadening and enriching the lives of persons in the mountain area
  2. Recognition of the vast potentials in human and environmental resources of the Pine Mountain region
  3. Recognition that life and conditions do not remain static, but are constantly changing; ability and willingness to adapt program[s] to meet such changes

B. Objectives

  1. To provide a warm, caring Christian atmosphere in which all persons exposed to it become aware of life’s meaning
  2. To provide conditions in which the desire to learn is fostered and in which enthusiasms are gained by osmosis rather than by direct attack
  3. To provide opportunities for young and old for discovering and understanding the world about them
  4. To demonstrate by example the best ways to make use of one’s own and other abilities and resources, in order that life may be made richer for all.

Director’s Job Description

  1. To help implement by his own life and by other means the philosophy of the school.
  2. To establish priorities in program and personnel.
  3. To be responsible for physical care of buildings.
  4. To be responsible for fiscal matters.
  5. To engage and to terminate personnel as needs arise.
  6. To maintain close and understanding ties between school and community.
