AGRICULTURAL PERSPECTIVE OF KENTUCKY GEOLOGY by Willard R. Jillson 1925

From the book collection of Katherine Pettit.

[Reprinted from the Pan-American Geologist, Vol. XLIV, Nov.-Dec., 1925, pp.295-308, 387-396]

The Pan-American Geologist is in the public domain. It was published before 1923. This implies that you can freely copy and distribute the work within the United States.

This reprint provides an overview of the natural geological regions of the State of Kentucky. The author states the purpose of the article is

…to set forth some of these geologic relationships and thereby enable the student of agricultural conditions to realize a little more clearly the real causes for certain soil conditions which are now fairly well defined in Kentucky.

Based on his knowledge at the time (1925) the author describes the oldest exposed rocks in Kentucky are those found in the bed of the Kentucky River near Camp Nelson and the mouth of the Dix River both of which are in the Blue Grass section of the State. Also discussed in the small publication is the formation of the various soils and rock formations across the State, including the Eastern region.

Jillson describes the formation of the Pine Mountain in eastern Kentucky

The Pine Mountan has its origin in a great faulted anticline, overthrust to the northwest two to to five miles or more. The magnitude of this break is indicated by the fact that it extends continuously for over a hundred miles through which distance the Chattanooga shale is frequently brought to the surface along its northwest face.

Jillson provides a clear, yet restrained overview of the relationship of the geology of the Eastern Coalfield to the agricultural limitations of the area, but he suggests that the forests of the region hold great promise.

Katherine Pettit collected many of Jillson’s publications as she studied the agricultural possibilities of the new settlement school being built under the shadow of Pine Mountain.
